Countries with Special Requirements

The vast majority of countries that Rotary ESSEX sends students to do not have academic or age prerequisites. Listed below are countries that impose special prerequisites on ESSEX applicants.

Australia Academic Requirement:
You must be in the top 10% of your school class.
Austria Language Requirements:
(1) Requires at least two years of German in high school, and (2) you should have average grades in German.
Belgium Language Requirement:
(1) Requires at least two years of French in high school, OR (2) your agreement that you will take private tutoring to become relatively fluent in French.
(Note: You will be required to sign a written letter of commitment if you are meeting the language requirement using option #2).
(Note: if you do not meet the French language requirements and you choose Belgium, you will be assigned to a Flemish speaking community, if available).

Age Requirement:
Minimum age is 161⁄2 at time of arrival.
Denmark Academic Requirement:
You should have excellent foreign language ability.
(Note: you will be required to pay an extra language camp fee).

Age Requirement:
You must be between the ages of 16 and 17 years, 11 months at the time of your arrival.
England / British Isles Academic Requirement:
If English is your primary language, you may not choose England or the British Isles for your exchange unless you are in the top 10% of your class. If your primary language is not English you should be in the upper third of your class.
Finland Academic Requirement:
You should have excellent foreign language ability.
(Note: you will be required to pay an extra language camp fee).

Age Requirement:
You must be between the ages of 16 and 18 1⁄4 at the time of arrival.
France Language Requirement:
(1) Requires at least two years of french in high school, OR (2) your agreement that you will take private tutoring to become relatively fluent.

Germany Academic Requirement:
At least some knowledge of German is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, but not mandatory.
New Zealand Academic Requirement:
You must be in the top 10% of your school class.

Age Requirement:
You must be under 17 at time of arrival
Norway Age Requirement:
You must be between the ages of 17 and 18 1⁄2 years at the time of arrival.
South Africa Academic Requirement:
You must be in the top 10% of your school class.
Spain Academic Requirements:
(1) Requires at least two years of Spanish in high school, and (2) you have average grades in Spanish.
Sweden Age Requirement:
You be 16 years old by July 1st of the year you are going abroad.
(Note: you will be required to pay an extra language camp fee).
Switzerland Academic Requirements:
(1) Requires at least two years of German in high school, and (2) you have average grades in German.

Age Requirement:
Minimum age is 17 at time of arrival.
Canada ESSEX Requirement:
You may only go to Canada if you are from the United States - you will be in the French speaking portions of the country.
(Canadians can't choose Canada).
United States ESSEX Requirement:
Only Canadian students may go to the United States.
(Americans can't choose United States).
